Bolivia’s president Jeanine Anez said on Thursday she has tested positive for Covid-19.
“I feel well, I feel strong, I am going to keep working remotely from my isolation, and I want to thank all the Bolivians who are working to help us in this health crisis”, Anez said. “Together, we will come out of this”, she added.
Anez said she had taken a test as many government officials had fallen ill earlier. At least seven ministers, including Bolivia’s health minister, had tested positive for the virus.
Bolivia is due to hold general elections on September 6. The elections were scheduled for May but were delayed because of the pandemic.
With more than 42,000 infections and 1,500 deaths from the disease, Bolivia is one of the worst affected countries per capita in the world.
